Meet Bailey; oh how those porcupine quills in her face must hurt. On Friday, the dog was spotted after she had been hit in the face by a porcupine. And on Monday, Bailey arrived at the Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center; the quills still in her face.

Bailey is an emergency medical rescue at Dallas Animal Services. Someone please explain to me how with an 18M budget and vet suite and Friends of Dallas Animal Services and Operation Kindness that she is sitting there like this. I have seen small shelters with no budget fundraise and get a dog with quills to a vet immediately. Yet she sits at Dallas Animal Services. How is this okay and how is this humane?

This is what we know, and from the following report, Bailey was helped by a Good Samaritan who spotted her in that condition on Friday and tried to help her. On Monday, the finder brought her to the shelter.

Bailey arrived at the shelter on Monday as a stray from the community. The dog was noted to have porcupine quills stuck in her face since last Friday, which the finder mentioned was affecting her eating and drinking, so we hope to find placement by 7/25 at 11 am. The good news is that since she has been in the care of the shelter, she has been eating gruel to get something in her system.

When visiting her in the kennel, Bailey was lying down calmly and sat up to greet the volunteer. She was calm.

A statement as to Bailey’s condition has been released by the shelter.

Hello, as soon as we have a veterinarian on site, the quills will be removed from this dog. Unfortunately, animals arrive at our facility in not so great shape fairly often, and this dog arrived this afternoon after all veterinarians had left for the day. Our priority is for animals in our care to receive appropriate medical care as soon as possible.

Animal advocates are calling upon Dallas city leaders to adopt a more acceptable and humane care procedures for animals at the shelter. How long is acceptable that Bailey should be in a cage and left to suffer? How does anyone at the shelter walk by Bailey and not insist emergency care be given?

The good news, however is that Bailey has been rescued by The Love Pit.

Please do not honor pledges until the dog is safely out of the shelter. Updates to follow.
