Video shows man abandon mother dog and young pups in driveway at shelter

On Wednesday, a man drove to the driveway of a Dorchester County, South Carolina, animal shelter and abandoned a mother dog and her young puppies. The Dorchester Paws organization described the cruel incident, writing:

At approximately 3:29 p.m. today, a man came to Dorchester Paws with the sole intent to dump a newly nursing mother & her babies. Instead of knocking on our door, he abandoned 8 starving puppies, approximately 4 weeks old, and their neglected mother (covered by a sheet) in the middle of our driveway, just far enough away for his license plate to not be seen.

The distraught mother dog circled her puppies for 10 minutes before running away – at times, frighteningly near traffic. Thankfully, the abandoned mother and litter of pups were spotted by shelter staff, and they rushed to save them. The shelter writes:

What you see in the video is a compressed version of what happened next. The cliff notes would say that our staff dedicated an hour of time, resources and heart into saving her life. While the outcome is thrilling, today is not a day for the history books. Unfortunately today, is our reminder that everyday animals are still being abandoned, neglected and abused.

The mother dog and her babies are now safe. Anyone who wants to help the shelter care for these dogs, and the other animals, can do so in a variety of ways.
