The Thailand government has adopted an initiatives where old billboards are being recycled to be used as dog shelters for stray dogs. According to the country’s Department of Livestock Department, more than 750,000 dogs are strays, and the numbers continue to increase. The dogs roam the streets struggling to survive as they are exposed to weather extremes with no place for them to take cover.
Stand for Strays, has been converting billboards across the country and making them into foldable ten-like animal shelters proving that helping these innocent pets does not have to be expensive, yet can provide the animals with at least some minimal relief from the elements.
The Thai community group, Stand for Strays came up with the design called a Homeless Allot Model. The credit goes to Ajarn Yossaphon Chanthongleen who came up with the idea using the refitted billboards that could be installed and used anywhere in the country. The shelter is placed against an existing wall and is held in place with hinges at the top. A small platform is installed for the dog to use as a bed so he/she is not lying on the wet or excessively hot ground.
The panels can easily unfold when someone spots a homeless stray:
“…installing shelter for stray dogs in the community with small architecture. It can protect stray dogs from sunlight and rain and improves the living conditions for both humans and dogs.”

Why can’t we use them in the U.S.? Doesn’t it seem like a logical alternative rather than some of the heartbreaking situations of strays lying in the pouring rain, in snowstorms or in the excruciating heat of the day with absolutely no protection?
