A senior dog, who was abandoned outside of an animal shelter in the summer of 2021, has passed away after receiving a “lifetime of love” from the people who have been caring for him. His name was Teddy Bear, and the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach took it upon themselves to spoil him after learning that he had advanced cancer.

On Tuesday, the animal welfare agency broke the news to Teddy Bear’s fans, writing:

Our hearts are shattering as our dear Teddy Bear crossed the rainbow bridge today. 💔

Explaining how the senior dog came to be in their care:

Teddy was abandoned in our front yard in July 2021 at the age of 15. We found him early one hot morning, scared and confused, with his back end covered in blood. He had a tumor, which our vet determined was terminal cancer and inoperable.

Nobody knew how much time Teddy Bear had, so staff and volunteers were determined to fill his life with “adventure and happiness.” The shelter said, “From boat rides, meeting penguins and to being knighted, Teddy lived 9 amazing months with us.”

Adding:

To say he was spoiled rotten is an understatement. When people met Teddy, they often assumed he was a puppy because of how vivacious he acted. Teddy truly enjoyed meeting new people on a daily basis, and we take comfort in knowing he touched so many lives.

The shelter explained their devotion to Teddy Bear, and their wish that all animals could enjoy the same adoration:

In his 9 months with us, Teddy received a lifetime of love. A fierce and unconditional love we wish all animals could experience. While we knew his time was limited, today was still immensely hard for our team. Nine months was far longer than anyone imagined Teddy would have with us, but today that time feels too short. If love alone could have healed Teddy, he would have outlived us all.

And touching final words:

We take comfort in knowing up until the very end Teddy was so unbelievably happy and his little tail kept wagging. Teddy found his soulmate with us, and he passed peacefully in her arms with a trail of kisses leading him across the rainbow bridge. Teddy’s favorite place was the beach, and we know he’s running free along the biggest one right now. We love you Teddy Bear; you were the best boy ever. Save us a sunset walk.

Rest easy Teddy Bear.
