Update: After the publication of this article, the shelter announced that a home has been found for Pippin:

THANK YOU ALL FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS FOR ALL THE LOVE FOR PIPPIN. We are happy to say that she will be going to her new home this weekend! It was a tough decision, but we feel that we made the right choice for Pippin and her well-being.

On Tuesday afternoon, a Connecticut animal shelter issued a special request on behalf of a 19-year-old cat who lost her home after her owner was admitted to a nursing home. The City of New London introduced Facebook followers to the elderly cat, named Pippin, and described the sad situation:

We currently have a 19+ year old cat named Pippin at our shelter. Her mom has been sent to permanently live in a nursing home, and she has no family or friends who are able to take Pippin in. Pippin has lived her entire life as an only pet, with only her mom for company. She is quite lively for her age, but can be cranky at times like only an old-lady cat can.

Outlining their request for the senior cat:

What we are hoping is that someone out there would be willing to take Pippin in for whatever time she has left, so she doesn’t have to live the rest of her life out here, in a cage. Unfortunately, we can’t offer much in the way of financial help, but we can promise to take care of her end-of-life transition at our vet, when that time comes.

Nobody knows how much time Pippin has left, but everyone is in agreement that she should not be spending that time alone, in a cage. If you are interested in learning more about helping Pippin, the shelter advises what to do:

When she goes home, she’ll be provided with dry and canned food, a bed, and a carrier. There will be no adoption fee required, we just want her to have a happy place to live out the end of her days. Please contact our office at 860-447-5231 if you might be willing to open your heart and home to this poor old lady.
