A horribly neglected dog is recovering after someone threw her over a fence outside of a shelter in Boca Raton, Florida. The Shih Tzu, dubbed Parker, was the worst case of neglect and cruelty the shelter staff had ever seen.

On June 11, Tri-County Humane posted shocking images of the dog, writing of the impact the extreme neglect had on the little dog’s body:

I don’t know how to start a post like this. I guess it’s because I never saw anything like it before and personally I hope to never again. As many of you have seen on the news our shelter was blessed with the honor of saving Parker when someone threw her over our fence by the dumpster in the middle of the night. Her hair was cemented to her skin, her nails so long they were wrapped around her paws and wounds so old they were filled with maggots. The smell is something I will never forget.

And the work required to help Parker:

It took 5 staff members over two hours to shave her carefully, swapping out buzzers as they got hot, our Veterinarian suturing her open sores, culturing absolutely everything. We found mammory tumors and her eyes in a permanent open position because of the matting. One eye is not even fully formed.

Nobody knew if Parker would pull through, but she is proving herself to be a survivor. On Wednesday, the shelter posted a video of Parker walking on the grass, writing:

Parker Update: Do you think this was her first time feeling grass? When we first got her she couldn’t walk at all. 🙏💕
