An 85-year-old woman is facing charges following the grim discovery of dead and neglected animals on her property in Canajoharie, New York. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office identifies Carolee Start as the person arrested and charged after more than 20 dead animals were found on her farm, in addition to dozens of badly neglected animals.
As reported by CBS Albany, the authorities discovered the alarming situation after someone called to report a dying cow on Start’s property. After a warrant was obtained, the authorities were able to rescue 40 cattle, 13 donkeys and 8 miniature horses from Start’s farm. Help came too late for more than 20 cows and a donkey who were found dead on the property.
The rescued animals were described as malnourished and neglected. The dying cow that instigated the initial call to the police died during the investigation. Start is facing misdemeanor violations of the Agricultural and Markets Law.
