Nearly 4,000 beagles will soon be ready for adoption after having been rescued from a central Virginia research facility where they were kept in atrocious conditions. The dogs were seized from an Envigo facility in Cumberland under a federal judge’s order according to the Humane Society of the United States.

According to the statement issued by the HSUS, the organization is now connecting with shelter and rescue partners after the transfer plan was approved in order to place these dogs in homes. The rescues have 60 days to remove all of the dogs.

During an extensive investigation with a federal and a PETA investigation, more than 350 puppies died at the facility attributed to unknown causes. More than 400 dogs were seized in June. The beagles were bred in the Envigo facility to be sold for use in pharmaceutical and biotech research.

Some puppies had been inadvertently crushed to death by their mothers inside the cramped cages, while others suffered from hydrocephalus, were eviscerated, or just couldn’t survive the harsh conditions.

Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, located in Virginia, will be offering 1,500 dogs for adoption during the last week in July.

By next week, we will begin moving dogs off the premises and Homeward Trails once again will plan to take dogs into our program and to assist with getting them to partner groups.

We are looking for fosters and adopters for these dogs as well as donations to offset our costs of transporting and vetting them! This will be a huge undertaking and donations are needed!
