An emergency rescue is currently underway by Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue. The 10-year-old emaciated male dog was found tied to a fence in Brooklyn. The shelter named him Saul.
Saul has been a longtime victim of neglect and cruelty. He is reported to be one of the worst cases of starvation the shelter has seen. On a body score scale ranging from 1 to 10, Saul is near the bottom. He weighs 14-pounds and is unable to walk due to his lack of strength.
Perhaps one of the most tearful scenes is how Saul attempted to crawl to a food bowl; he is ravenously hungry, but must be fed small portions to prevent complications. He is currently also being administered intravenous fluids for hydration.
“Lab works reveal he is anemic and he has been starved for a long time. Matted fur, overgrown nails and pressure sores over his bony areas. Saul is terrified that he will suffer further and growls at his handlers while he poops himself. Our hearts break imagining the pain he has endured,” the rescue organization posted on their Facebook page along with the heartbreaking photos of Saul being administered emergency care.
Saul will be transferred to an emergency hospital today where he will be able to have 24/7 care, nutritional support and hydration.
