In Hollywood, Florida, a 31-year-old man has been charged in the stabbing death of the dog found stuffed in a blue suitcase. Brendan Evans was arrested on Wednesday after the October 10 incident when Ollie the dog was found almost dead, with his paw sticking out of a suitcase behind a building in an alley on Lee Street.
According to NbcNews, when detectives entered the apartment of Evans, they discovered a gruesome scene, including mutilated rats, bloody symbols on the walls and indications a satanic type of ritual had been performed. When interviewed, Evans told police he considers himself a voodoo priest, claiming he had the right to torture the animals as he was practicing voodoo.
“Hollywood detectives have seen and investigated some animal cruelty cases before but none as horrific as we have seen in this case of Ollie,”stated Hollywood Police spokesperson Miranda Grossman. “In the freezer’s top shelf, several frozen rats were observed. The first white rat appeared to have had its legs removed and a circular piece of scalp was removed from the top of its head. A second dead white rat with a severed tail was located on the top level with white wax attached to its body,” the police report stated.
Another rat was found decapitated and police also reported finding two cat paws in the freezer.
“It appeared that something within the stove was bleeding and struggling inside the oven, smearing suspect blood while the over door was closed. Small tufts of fur were visible to the eye on the oven grate,” the police report added.
And on the top of Evans’ dresser had been a shrine of candles, melted wax, blood and fur; there police found one of the Crime Stoppers flyer of Ollie ripped in half.
In a separate report by a Delray police officer, in June a person selling kittens filed a complaint that Evans bought two kittens and days later called asking for more kittens. In Fort Lauderdale, a police report in February indicated Evans tried to kill a mother duck and her ducklings; when questioned at the time, Evans said it was his religious right to practice voodoo.
Ollie had been stabbed 50 times, beaten and stuffed inside the suitcase. He had severe lacerations to the top of his head as well as his body and had been wearing a red collar. The cruelty inflicted upon this dog sent shivers through the country. A reward had been offered just shy of $60,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for such a heinous deed. More than $100,000 in donations had been raised for Ollie; Grateful Paws collected $40,000 to help pay his medical bills.
Investigators confirmed DNA from Evans was found on the suitcase. In addition, police found a dog tooth in his wallet and also has a criminal history. In 2012, he was arrested by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office for domestic battery and is currently on probation for bank robbery
Evans has been charged with Aggravated Animal Cruelty.
