Eight puppies found abandoned in a cardboard box in Gaston County, North Carolina were reunited with their mother on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

According to Gaston Animal Control and Enforcement, the puppies had been left in a cardboard box at the agency’s previous location. The organization moved six years ago, and there is a sign with the current address attached to the closed fence.

The puppies were reportedly discovered by chance hours after the woman left them. Because the puppies were only about one week old, they were extremely lucky to have been discovered so quickly. The little ones need to be nursed every few hours and were not able to keep themselves warm.

These guys are fighters, though. We have them, safe and warm.
A photo of the sign had been posted on the shelter’s Facebook page just above where the puppies were found clearly stateing the agency had moved to Business Park Court in Gastonia; thus ruling out any “mistake.”
Information about the puppies and their mother:

INFO: Roxie Animal ID#: 60769900, 3 year old GSD, unaltered female, 67lbs, HW negative. 8 puppies approximately 1 week of age
On the shelter’s Facebook page, the following heartbreaking note was posted:
this was intentional. this person left these eight tiny puppies to freeze or starve. they did not care.
The mother of the puppies is a three-year-old German shepherd named Roxie. The family has been reunited.

Investigators have not released the name of the suspect in the case, but Animal Care and Enforcement confirmed that charges are pending. On Thursday, the woman has been identified.

This family has rescue commitment with Old Dominion Humane Society
