At the Animal Friends of the Valleys (AFV) in Wildomar, California, the shelter’s night drop boxes are frequently used for after-hours drop-offs. Sadly, some of the most challenging and heartbreaking situations greet the staff early in the morning.

It had been on Friday night at 4:19 a.m. when an unknown man arrived with a dog in a small cage. He abandoned her in front of the door at the night box and hurried away. She had no shelter, no water and no food. The early morning employee, Phil arrived at 6:50 a.m. to find the dog barely able to move, and moved the kennel cage to a “Night Drop” kennel area until the shelter opened. For more than two hours, the scared, very pregnant dog had barely been able to move; she had tried so hard just to turn over.

By 8:00 the shelter team had arrived and rushed the dog to the comfort of a warm area, and within the hour, she gave birth to eight healthy puppies.

Is it any surprise, the mother dog waited to bring her puppies into the world until she sensed they would be safe?

Meanwhile, the staff are hoping for the public’s help identifying this person:

He should’ve called the number on the Night Drop door, and this poor dog would’ve been in a sheltered kennel. Had he done the right thing, she would’ve been in much less distress and our after-hours team could’ve rushed over to put her in a more peaceful spot. Luckily, she’s safe & sound now.
The Animal Control team is ready to prosecute this man, however, we need your help identifying him. Please call AFV at 951-674-0618 if you recognize him.
