Litter of 8 newborn puppies discovered abandoned inside a shopping bag at Philadelphia store

In South Philadelphia, Outcast Rescue came to the aid of eight newborn puppies abandoned in a bag in a shopping cart outside of a Target store.

On December 19, a Good Samaritan heard the desperate cries of the newborn puppies; they had only been a few hours old, and their umbilical cords were still wet.

When the puppies arrived at the organization’s veterinarian partner, the body temperatures of the newborns had been dangerously low. They were immediately placed in incubators as veterinarians tried their best to stabilize their conditions. Beth Hucke, the organization’s board director was outraged:

They literally threw these puppies away like they were garbage. What would cause somebody to just toss babies into a shopping cart?

Once the puppies were able to regain normal body temperatures, they began to thrive.

Last night the smallest of the puppies died. She had frostbite on her toes and struggled to thrive alongside her siblings. She had been the runt, and needed extra care, which included more frequent feeding and constant blood sugar checks, but there was never a moment where she wasn’t being watched. Sadly, she suffered a hypoglycemic episode and developed puppy syndrome – a sad situation that occurs too often in cases like this.

None of the puppies are able to be adopted. They are newborns and will not be ready to meet their new humans for at least two months.

As for suggestions the rescue has been receiving concerning a surrogate mother, the reality is most nursing mothers do not accept puppies that do not belong to them. And asking a mother dog to take on eight more newborns is hardly fair.

What really bothers the rescue volunteers spending their days and nights awake and lovingly taking care of these innocent tiny victims, is why the owner of these puppies couldn’t have walked into the ACCT Philly or the PSPCA and surrendered the puppies? No one would have questioned them, but the puppies would have been safe and cared for from the very start of their tiny lives.

Abandoning these puppies was “just inhumane.”

The Pennsylvania SPCA is aware of this situation. Many thanks to ACCT Philly for acting quickly and contacting the rescue so these babies could be brought safely into our nursery.
