In Southeast Los Angeles County, in the city of Cudahy, a matted little mess of a pup had been abandoned, and no one in the neighborhood had known when or where he had arrived. He kept a low profile; he would come and go at night, following his keen sense of smell to the food and water kind neighbors would set out for him along his path. When he no longer was hungry, he would run back to the same spot; somehow he maneuvered his way in and out of a grated sewer area nearby.
Last Friday, just by chance, a local rescuer, Becks Goodman spotted the dog. The dog had come out of the sewer just as she drove by. Her heart broke as she watched the little dog stealthily grab the available food and then, as if running for his life because he was so scared, retreat back into the sewer.
Becks reached out for independent rescuer Suzette Hall. When she arrived, another rescue partner, Mary Nakiso met her at the location. There he was – the tiny dog trying his best to hide in the filthy sewer.
I realized that a trap was not going to work. There was so much food that he wasn’t hungry.
Fortunately, in the area there were road and factory workers able to lend a hand. The entire area was filled with businesses next to the railroad tracks. There were no homes around; it went without saying someone had abandoned this tiny dog, and his fight to survive had to have been a daily struggle.
Check out this short video clip – this is where he hid. (Facebook Watch videos can not be viewed if not signed into Facebook. We try our best to include as many photos as possible if viewers are unable to see these videos. We regret any inconvenience.)
One of the workers was able to use a crowbar and lifted the circular lid off the sewer. And there he was; huddled in the corner and so scared. Yes, it was time to set him free of this tiny prison.
RESCUED!
And finally he was rescued. Away they went to Suzette’s partner veterinarian where he was checked over. First, however he needed to be shaved and bathed.

The stench of having lived in a sewer was overwhelming. The best part – however – is he was rescued, and it was just by chance.

AND here he is now. Meet Lambert. Just a few days ago, one couldn’t even see his eyes nor could anyone tell if he was a boy or a girl because of the severe matting.

I don’t know if he’s ever been touched because sweet baby is so scared to even be touched
But I know he feels so much better after getting all that icky sewer debris, and tangled mess off of him
He will soon know that touch is good
His past was stripped away
He was not trash
He is a hidden treasure.
