It had been a group of compassionate animal advocates just one week ago who acted quickly to pull an abandoned Great Pyrenees out from underneath a shed after he had been shot by an arrow. Sadly, the person responsible for shooting this shy dog had been a teenager who told authorities he was afraid the dog would try to mate with his female dog who had been in heat. The teen claimed the dog had been on his property, and therefore he was legally allowed to shoot.

Dallas Dog – Rescue.Rehab.Reform stepped forward; with one staff member traveling two hours to render help needed for this dog. He has been named Marvel, and during the rescue, part of the arrow broke off. He was quickly transported to an emergency veterinarian and had already suffered a significant blood loss.

The arrow had entered through the dog’s scapula and exited the other side, leaving behind a tubular wound that required immediate surgery; his surgical repair continues to heal.

The dog had been abandoned by his family when they moved, and he had been roaming the neighborhood looking for his family and for food. Just days after his rescue and his surgical procedures, Marvel was already standing:

Look at this incredible boy!  He’s not only standing, but today he took his first steps around the clinic!  We couldn’t be more proud of his progress!

On Saturday, Marvel’s drainage tubes were removed as he continued making progress towards his recovery. He lifts his head and relaxes when people approach and pet him. He still needs to be carried outdoors for his bathroom breaks, but everything is coming along to the satisfaction of the veterinarians and staff involved in his anticipated full recovery.

Here’s a video of him during the volunteer’s visit today. Marvel is still in medical boarding and will remain there a little longer to ensure his safety and no complications.
