After a lifetime spent in captivity, an 87-year-old elephant named SomBoon is finally on her path to freedom. Taken from her jungle home as a young calf, SomBoon endured a grueling 87 years providing rides and entertainment. The weight of her years and the hardships she faced are evident in her thin frame and diminished senses.

Somboon’s luck changed when rescuers from the Save Elephant Foundation spotted her. Recognizing her suffering, they secured her release and began the long journey to a sanctuary. The 30-hour transport was a challenge for her but the caregivers patiently coaxed her and ensured her comfort.

As she embarked on her journey to freedom, we aim to make the remaining days of Grandma Elephant’s life happy, allowing her to experience kindness and, most importantly, freedom. No longer will her ankles be bound in chains.

When she arrived at the sanctuary, Grandma SomBoon defied the norm. Exhausted from her journey, and a lifetime of hardship, she promptly sought the sand pile prepared for her, sleeping soundly amidst the bustling activities around her. Many new elephants are still untrusting and paranoid, and it takes weeks before they feel comfortable enough to lie down; but not SomBoon.

After an hour of deep slumber, SomBoon attempted to rise but couldn’t, inducing panic. Our Mahout team and critical care staff swiftly aided her, helping her regain the ability to stand. Tonight, a vigilant team of veterinarians and mahouts will closely monitor her condition.

At the sanctuary, more than 70% of the elephant population are elderly and who have been forced to commit their lives to hard work. In their old age, these elephants face challenges in walking, eating, and sleeping. Many struggle to stand up after lying down, requiring daily assistance from our mahouts. Some mornings, multiple elderly elephants need help getting up, and the process is carried out with utmost gentleness.

SomBoon is among those unable to rise on her own at this moment, necessitating daily assistance. The sanctuary will provide her with the space, care and companionship she deserves in her twilight years. Here, she can roam freely, socialize with other elephants, and experience the simple joys of mud baths and grazing under the open sky. It is hoped with proper care and good nutrition, she will regain her strength and eventually be able to stand by herself.

This story is a stark reminder of the plight of captive elephants. Many, like her, are forced to endure a life of hardship and isolation. Her rescue serves as a beacon of hope, highlighting the tireless efforts of organizations dedicated to elephant welfare.

As SomBoon takes her first tentative steps towards a life of freedom, the world watches with anticipation. Her journey is a testament to the enduring spirit of these magnificent creatures and the power of compassion.
