Scrabble had previously been rescued from euthanasia at a Tennessee shelter with his brother Checkers. The seven-month-old puppies were lucky enough to have been fostered through the guidance of Schultz’s Guest House dog rescue based in Dedham, Massachusetts.

The young puppy had been so excited when his new family picked him up; his tail wagging non stop. Unfortunately, Scrabble’s confusion and sadness was all so apparent when he was returned less than three days later; his now ex-adopters claiming they just didn’t have the time or the desire for a dog.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, (ASPCA), more than 6.3 million pets are surrendered to shelters with nearly a million facing euthanasia annually.

In an interview with Newsweek, Merrill Fortier, from Schultz’s Guest House, admits that despite strict requirements for adoption, dogs being returned happen too often. Maybe it’s all part of the “disposable” attitude too many people have become accustomed to, and these people fail to realize dogs are sentient animals and feel the loneliness and abandonment when they are no longer wanted by their human companions.

Fortunately, Scrabble, whose brother Checkers had been previously adopted and is enjoying his life, social media has made all the difference for this little cutie. On November 5, the rescue updated us on the happy news:

HAPPY TAILS SCRABBLE!

Many of you have reached out about Scrabble. He has made quite the splash in the media and on social. Thank you for sharing his story. It’s because of your help his new mom Cindy and dad David saw him and fell in love. Scrabble (now Timmy) is heading to North Attleboro where he will have lots of land to roam and two kitty siblings. He’ll be walking 4 miles a day with dad. He’s already settling in beautifully and will have a long happy life with his new loving family!
