In DeKalb County, Georgia the Dekalb County Animal Services posted a heartbreaking notice on their Facebook page, explaining that severe overcrowding now could result in the euthanasia of more than 200 dogs.
There are currently over 650 dogs in the shelter, and intakes are averaging 135 more dogs arriving each week. The shelter is in desperate need of help; there is no room to house incoming animals without another dog leaving the shelter. And so the choices are adoption, foster, reclaim, rescue transfer or as a last resort – euthanasia. Just this week, 30 dogs are at risk of dying because there is no space to house them. This is by far the highest number of animals the shelter has ever had entering the shelter.
According to the shelter, 250 dogs must find homes before Thursday, September 14th.
The shelter is using temporary crates in the conference rooms and offices in attempts to give more time for these dogs to be fostered or adopted and find homes.
The Department of Agriculture is returning to review the state of the shelter next week, and they need to ensure there are enough enclosures to properly house all dogs and accommodate new intakes, which means 250 dogs must find homes; otherwise more will need to be euthanized.
No one wants to euthanize a dog as a solution for space, and the staff and volunteers are heartbroken knowing these decisions are inevitable without the help of the community.
