Barbie’s heartbreaking plight started out so tragically. Late in August, she had been found at a local park in the Clarks Summit area of Pennsylvania; her leash and collar attached and her toenails painted. Surely, she once had someone who loved her. She arrived at the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter in extreme distress.
Because of her anxiety, she was given a sedative to calm her, but apparently when the medication began to wear off, Barbie began to chew the cement wall to relieve her pent up tensions. When the staff arrived at the shelter the next morning, Barbie had completely destroyed whatever she could of her kennel, including having chewed through the trap door that led to a separate holding area. The entire part of the shelter had to be rearranged to accommodate her as well as for the safety and well-being of the other dogs and cats.

Sadly, despite reaching out on social media and neighbors in the community for any information to help the dog, Barbie’s family never showed up. The shelter was desperate to ensure the safety, wellbeing and mental health of the animals left behind and abandoned. Barbie took abandonment extra hard.
Barbie was soon able to be placed in a foster home, and thanks to her foster family who allowed her time to decompress.
… fostered out and quickly returned because her pitty smile scared the foster family. Barbie is lover of a dog, she will be on your lap all day, kissing you non stop if you allow it. Some people don’t handle affection from dogs well, so at the shelter she waits, for someone who can understand her and meet her where she is at emotionally.

Since being back at the shelter, Barbie is now decompressing in the humane officer’s office. She is making progress and has garnered interest from potential foster families, however her testing with other dogs did not go well, and she will need to go to a home without other pets.
She has done very well with humans, workers, children as well as volunteers, but she needs to continue to relax and recover from whatever previous trauma she has experienced. She exhibited no separation anxiety, however returning to the kennel has been traumatic for her.
Barbie needs a long term foster or a forever home. Please consider adopting the harder to adopt dogs; they are worth every ounce of inconvenience you will have to endure in order to love them. They are extra precious and deserving. A little extra effort from a human is the difference between a cage and a couch .
