It had been a concerned neighbor who called Stray Rescue of St. Louis about a stray pup who had been hiding out in a dilapidated house trying so desperately to stay warm and safe. Temperatures outside had plunged into the 30s, and the tiny dog that no one wanted, curled up in a corner, shivered uncontrollably, and all she wanted to do was hide.

On Sunday, Chief Life Saving Officer Donna Lochmann and her team entered the dangerous area and found her. They named the frightened lost soul, Habanero, and the plan to rescue her from the hell hole soon began. Sadly, many stray dogs just looking to survive, hide in these freezing, cold, dark and dangerous houses.

This isn’t the way any dog should have to live:

Early in the afternoon, Habenero, unbeknown to her at the time, would soon be cuddled in a blanket, fed and be asleep with both eyes closed.

We are back with a crate and a game plan. Her little shaking leg … What matters is she no longer has to live in this hell hole. Habenero is SAFE and will never ever have to live like this ever again. Signs tell us there could be more dogs staying here, so we’re going to set up a camera and keep an eye on the area.

Check out Habenero’s video. She was rescued from this heartbreaking environment.

Tonight she’ll get a blankie, stuffed animals to cuddle, a nutritious bowl of Blue Buffalo, and she doesn’t have to sleep with one eye open.
