Stray pup lived in a makeshift crate home where he stood guard until kindness arrived

In South Los Angeles, a skin and bones stray had been hanging out in the area for at least six months. He had no where to go, no one to love him and seemingly no hope for his family to ever return and take him home.

Because he was extremely skittish, neighbors were not able to help much, but one Good Samaritan fashioned a tiny home for the pup out of an old crate and tarp to keep him dry from rain storms and hopefully a bit warmer and more secure on those chilly nights. She would leave him food and water, and the lonely dog would sleep in his tiny enclosure at night, and when morning came, he would come out and lie upon the grassy area during the day. Not much of a life for a dog – but at least he had a chance and someone cared.

On Thursday, popular rescuer Suzette Hall, founder of the rescue, Logan’s Legacy 29 started in memory of her son, had been asked to help. The poor pup had been on his own far too long, and it was feared he could be struck by a car crossing the road or become a victim of abuse or cruelty. In addition, he was so very skinny; there was no doubt he needed to be rescued.

When Suzette arrived, he had been taking a nap on the grass.

So skinny and dirty I could see his bones sunk in. I snuck up quietly. Set my trap with hot dogs. I kid you not. I literally turned around for a second. And he was already safe in my trap. He probably never had a hot dog in his life. He was finally rescued.

As Suzette coaxed him out of the trap, he sunk his head into her arms. Maybe it was the first time he had ever been held? Those days are now over. He will no longer be known as “the stray.” He has a name now; meet Captain.

Welcome to your new life Captain. We are sure you will never look back.
