In Clare County, Michigan the animal shelter was able to finally capture Zaria, after she became stranded on Hayes Township’s Cranberry Lake for nearly a month. The brown and white Great Dane had slipped her collar, ran away and jumped into a nearby canal. She had been stranded on the island since August 17. Local Animal Control, Sheriff’s Department and many local residents tried to bring Zaria to safety without success.

Volunteers and professional trackers had tried to capture the dog, but she repeatedly eluded baited traps left in the area where she had been spotted. And finally on September 21, Zaria was captured, and has been recuperating at the Clare County Animal Shelter.

Last week Zaria’s first update since she was captured came:

Zaria update: Zaria is doing well here at the Shelter. She has gained weight, and been treated for tapeworms. She is now feeling safer and will come to the door of her “Bedroom” to meet us. She then retreats to her doggie couch and waits for her meals. She is being fed 4 times a day with her special diet, but that will change soon to a regular diet. She spends time up front with Staff before the Shelter opens, and is walked at least 4 times a day (small outside walks) by the kennel staff. This will help her gain trust back. Thank you to everyone that has donated food and other donations. They are appreciated by ALL the animals here

And Zaria’s second update on Wednesday was even more promising. What could be better than a happy “tail wag.”?

Zaria update # 2. Zaria has gained a total of 10.5 lbs, and is doing great. We got the very first “tail wag” today….when she saw us this morning. Finally starting to trust people again. She is up in the office in the mornings before we open getting some one on one time. Thanks again for all the community support throughout this whole ordeal. We also went out and cleared the island yesterday. Thanks again to Frank for ‘ferrying ” us back and forth to remove the pallets, and our trap.
