In Clare County, Michigan, the local animal shelter is seeking volunteers to help rescue a dog that became stranded on the small island in Hayes Township’s Cranberry Lake after he slipped out of his collar and ran away by swimming across a canal.

According to Bob Dobson with Clare County Animal Control, the dog, named Zaria, has been on the island for 12 days. He is described as a brown and white Great Dane.

Zaria escaped from her new home on August 17, 2022 and has been stranded on the island. Local Animal Control, Sheriff’s Department and many local residents have tried to bring Zaria to safety without success. Local animal control doesn’t have a large enough trap for Zaria.

This dog is out on the island on Cranberry lake. We ( thanks to Officer David ) got a drone up today and spotted her. Myself and another aco went onto the island and we tracking her by using the drone to follow, after awhile she went missing again. We did not want to push her to hard as you can see in the picture we do not want to exhaust her to much, it could kill her. I called Harrison Lumber and they are going to donate pallets so we can make a better path to an open area on the island where we will set a trap for a few days, fingers crossed. if that does not work i am hoping to get volunteers that don’t mind muck and getting wet, i was soaked today, to get on the boat and get off and make a line and get the dog to one spot, she might cross and canal and someone will be there to meet her. i will keep everyone up to date on this, if we do not have success with the trap looking for Thursday to hit the island.

Two humane traps have since been set, and the dog has been seen in the general area. Moore’s K9 Recovery have been working together to help trap the pooch. If the dog is not rescued by Thursday, it is hoped volunteers will create a makeshift bridge so the dog would have a path to leave the island.

The public is being urged NOT to go out and look for the dog without animal control officers. Anyone who wants to help, please click here.

Donations are needed to help cover travel expenses to help Zaria.

This boy is NOT interested in taking a bath.
This doggo is only too glad to help his owner eat that big, big sandwich.
