Early Monday morning, the local sheriff’s department called Stray Rescue of St. Louis for emergency help. Sadly, it had to have been one of the saddest situations ever seen in the organization’s 25 years of rescue experience.

Let’s begin; make sure to be strong for “Christmas Rose.”

The Sheriff’s Department called us and Donna met them at the house. We can never prepare ourselves for sights like these.

Once the rescuers got past the trash, they saw two crates hidden in the house. The first crate held the remains of a dog who had starved to death. His disgusting prison cage was caked in feces, and he tried his best to get out. In the second crate, a dog stood over another deceased dog who also starved to death. Oddly, there had been a frying pan in each crate.

We got the survivor out, and we named this brave girl Christmas Rose. Once she was safely in the Jeep, we loaded the other two bodies, both boys. They will be cremated and given dignity in death. It is the very least we can do for these poor souls who have suffered so greatly at the hands of man…

Christmas Rose was scared when she saw her rescuers. And when they opened the door, everyone thought she would run out of that despicably filthy and death filled cage, but she was too scared to move.

Come on baby. Let’s get out of here. We’re leaving and you are never coming back.

Back at the shelter, the first order of business was to bathe Christmas Rose. She reeked of filth, urine and feces. When she was bathed, and now you will barely recognize her, all she wanted to do was crawl into the lap of Rachel – one of the ladies bathing her and reassuring her that it was all going to be fine.

And now starts the part of Christmas Rose’s life where she will be spoiled and loved.
