Broken hearts for rescuers as emaciated boxer lost his brave fight to live

At the Kentucky Humane Society, broken hearts prevailed on Thursday as Amos crossed the rainbow bridge. The elderly boxer arrived at an overcrowded shelter in horrific condition on Monday who reached out to the rescue to provide Amos with the care he needed.

Amos weighed just 38 pounds and should have weighed in the neighborhood of 60 to 70 pounds. The veterinary team formulated an eating plan and began to give Amos small meals which he happily ate; then started him on intravenous fluids to aid with his hydration.

We really feel Amos was more than likely someone’s old man who wandered off to find a place to lay himself to rest, but instead was picked up by animal control officers

And although everyone has been saddened by his loss, his last days had been filled with pure comfort and joy. He made many friends, and when he no longer wanted to eat dog food especially prepared for him, delicious human meals were sent over which he “devoured like a king.”

He laid in the sunshine, he played with Travolta, he gobbled a delicious Arby’s double beef and cheddar sandwich and our staff spent the day cuddling him and telling him what a good boy he is.

That afternoon, Amos was no longer able to stand, and he let us know it was time for him to go. We took turns saying our goodbyes and we held him as he passed on to the next world.

Everyone’s time with Amos was short, but now he is resting easy and there is no more pain. Sleep well Amos – you will be missed.

  1. So sorry this precious treasure couldn’t survive.

Amos, I know you are in Heaven. Please look for MacKitty and join his wonderful snuggle buddies group and RIP amongst loving friends.

  2. I was really hoping he would make it. But I could see he was a old man. Yes I agree he wandered away or was taken away and dumped. His little old body just gave up. My Molly looked just like this, not all the care in world could stop the weigh loss. And when she refused to eat her chicken I knew what was coming. But this old man like my Molly died with people who cared about him.
