In Treasure Island, Florida an eight-month-old beagle has found his new home at the Treasure Island Fire Department. The pup, appropriately named “Captain,” has been bringing smiles wherever his paws wander.

TIFR has a new Captain! Please join Treasure Island Fire Rescue in welcoming the newest member to our department. He is 8 months old, loves belly rubs and has giant adorable floppy ears. His name is Captain, and he is now an official member of Station 24.

During an extensive federal and PETA investigation, more than 350 puppies were found to have died at the facility attributed to unknown causes. More than 400 dogs were seized in June. The beagles were bred in the Envigo facility to be sold for use in pharmaceutical and biotech research.

Some puppies had been inadvertently crushed to death by their mothers inside the cramped cages, while others suffered from hydrocephalus, were eviscerated, or just couldn’t survive the harsh conditions.

Captain had been one of the 15 beagles at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay brought over for adoption. He was just one of 4,000 adult dogs and puppies rescued from the Cumberland, Virginia breeding facility where the beagles were sold for scientific research. The crew from the fire department reached out to the shelter and volunteered to adopt one of the dogs, who will be trained to be a therapy dog where he will help provide comfort for the first responders, who return to the station after caring for people having suffered from tragic accidents or injury.

The adorable little guy, who loves to wag his tail, loves receiving belly rubs and knows just how to flick those long, floppy ears around to garner attention will join the department at public education events and become the TIFR’s official mascot.

Captain is excited to meet all the residents and visitors of Treasure Island.
