Chinese hotel with captive polar bears for non stop viewing condemned by conservationists

In Northeastern China, the “Harbin Polar Land” is the latest attraction featuring hotel rooms built around a central polar bear enclosure consisting of harsh lighting, fake rocks and a shiny white painted floor. The hotel opened on Friday and has been widely condemned by conservationists.

According to the South China Morning Post, “gaps in China’s wildlife protection law allows businesses to exploit animals without any concern for their welfare,” stated a spokesman for China Animal Protection Network.

A video previewing the opening of the hotel showed the threatened species being photographed by crowds of people in what one media source called ” glass boxes in aquariums.” Polar bears usually roam thousands of miles and are not meant to be displayed for profits in confined areas pretending to make them appear in a natural habitat.

“A panoramic prison for polar bears … haven’t we learned anything about animal cruelty,” one social media commenter wrote.

The Harbin hotel resembles a giant igloo – its roof topped by artificial ice.

Chinese have often been criticized for their poor standards of care and lack of animal protection laws for animals.
