A skinny dog, barely noticed in central Georgia, spent the last four years tied to a tree. He was originally named Cocaine by his owners;  he weighed 25-pounds – less than half of what a dog his breed and body structure should weigh.

The Cordele Animal Shelter posted his heartbreaking story naming his Charlie:

RESCUE ONLY—NEEDS RESCUE ASAP

Charlie
Male
4 yrs
? lbs (underweight)
Bully Mix
HW Status

RESCUE ONLY- This picture says it all. This is how Charlie has lived his life. On a chain with no shelter from the weather, no bed and an empty bowl!! He’s very emaciated!!! Charlie is a 4 year old bully mix who has had a bad life. He needs some tender loving care. He is a sweet boy who was interested in the cats but ignored the dog. He is in rough shape and needs out of the shelter fast. He would be a good dog with some loving! This is currently the only information I have on Charlie. If you have any other questions about Charlie, you can call the shelter at 229-947-5306. Pledges would greatly increase her chances for rescue. PLEASE SHARE!

Animal advocates cared, shared his story on social media; Go Dogs Go Rescue Inc. came to his rescue on Friday.

“WHAT THE ACTUAL F*&#%!!!! Just wanted to share a small view into our ugly world and what humans do to these defenseless animals. This boy was named Cocaine and is four years old and weighing in at only 25.8 lbs he has spent his life tied to a tree. His picture has haunted us all here at Go Dogs, We are very tight for space, but thankfully a wonderful foster stepped forward to bring him into her home,” the organization posted on their Facebook page with the dog’s heartbreaking photos.

The dog has been renamed – his new name in Hero, and although he has a long road ahead of him until he will be ready for a new home, his life has already shown positive changes. Hero now has a fluffy bed to sleep in with soft blankets, he is on a re-feeding plan to help him safely gain weight and is receiving a lot of positive attention and love.

Surely you will want to share Hero’s update as of Saturday evening:

“Small update from foster mom …. He is great. I fed him a small meal and put the bed in his crate. He went in by himself and settle down. He has a nightlight and radio going. I am taking him out again before bed and gonna put a sweater on him.”

It is suspected Hero will test positive for heartworms and will have to be treated. For now, he is just decompressing and resting.
