In Los Angeles, California, three Italian mastiffs who had likely been abandoned by their owner and spent two months living in the Angeles National Forest, were rescued on Monday. Several hikers had spotted the dogs early in March, however no one was able to capture them.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the dogs continued to wonder the hillsides of Mount Mooney for several weeks during the cold snow storms, rainy days and recently scorching heat temperatures.

In late March, a team from the Dog Days Search & Rescue team from Simi Valley spent weeks giving the dogs food, water and shelter; the dogs would not let anyone get close to them. The team named the dogs, Steve, George and Grace.

A large pen was then constructed, and on Monday all three of the Mastiffs went into the pen.

“The team members were able to close the door and secure all three dogs. With the dogs safe and sound, the Dog Days SAR asked LASD Montrose Search and Rescue for help in transporting the Steve, George, and Grace down the steep hillside to the roadway. Team Montrose SAR responded and used their mountaineering skills to build a custom lowering system. This system used ropes and other equipment to carefully lower the dogs, who were now loaded in cages, down a steep hillside. Montrose Search and Rescue spent nearly two hours helping Steve, George, and Grace to the safety of flat ground.”

The dogs will receive all medical treatment needed and will be cared for at Dog Days, a registered 501(c)(3) non profit organization, volunteer based, animal search and rescue group. If you have any questions about Stevie, George and Grace, please visit their website at https://dogdayssar.com/

  1. My heart is breaking for these precious treasures. If I was in that area, (I live in Seattle) I would foster these precious treasures in a heartbeat. They would get lots of snuggles to reassure them that the world is OK!!! I am delighted that they were rescued!!!
Hope these precious treasures recover ASAP and are rehomed into loving furever families who will treat them as beloved family members.
