In Richland County, Ohio, the Humane Society located in Mansfield joined together with volunteers and staff members over the weekend to rescue 82 dogs and puppies living on a property.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Office had been investigating noise complaints from neighbors about loud amounts of dogs barking at a home on Saturday morning. When deputies arrived, they discovered a rusted old trailer with poodles stacked on top of each other in wire cages. The dogs were filthy, and the air they had been breathing was near toxic.

Deputies called the Humane Society of Rockland County to ask for immediate assistance. Managing Director Linda Chambers responded, and as officers entered the home, there were more dogs than expected living in deplorable conditions. Dachshunds, pugs, and beagles were discovered. One puppy was found dead, and one dog died after having been rescued and transported to the vet for emergency treatment.

On the organization’s Facebook page, they asked for help raising funds for supplies and treatments More than $24,000 has been raised which will help with veterinarian costs, immunizations, spay, neutering and heartworm testing. No one is discounting the puppies may yet come down with the very contagious and serious parvovirus.

This is not the humane thing to do for animals. They deserve so much better.

It is hoped many of the dogs will be available for adoption within the next few weeks.

An animal cruelty investigation is currently underway. So far, one person has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty.
