Humane society’s longest resident adopted at last after waiting more than year

At the McCracken County Humane Society located in Paducah, Kentucky, a happy-go-lucky pup who waited patiently for more than a year to find her own family, has been adopted.

It had been on January 9, 2026 when the non-profit animal welfare organization “acknowledged, but had not celebrated” the one year anniversary of Ceely’s arrival at the shelter. The dog had the dubious honor of having been there the longest.

This is how one volunteer described her:

She has no crimes under her belt. Ceely was brought to the facility last year after her and her sister were confiscated due to neglect. Since coming to the Humane Society, she has done so much better and has put on a healthy amount of weight. She could probably lose a couple pounds.

What could be wrong with Ceely that no one wanted to adopt her? After all, she is a youngster at two-years of age. She walks well on a leash and loves to go on long walks. She’s full of energy, but she does love to cuddle up with humans.

In addition, Ceely is spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on all of her vaccinations.

It was decided – Ceely is pretty perfect, but she just needs to have her pictures out there for potential families to see and a profile all about her to help people to get to know how fabulous she really is!

Ceely soon became a social media star. Her adorable photos and description flooded the internet. And then her smiles and eager tail wags paid off. Ceely has been adopted! Yes, it took 372 days, but the wait was worth it!

She was beyond excited to meet her new humans, and as an added bonus – she now has a new older fur brother.

Today is a day of celebration, and even though the staff and volunteers will miss seeing Ceely’s sweet face every day, this is what makes animal rescue worth all the efforts and tears.
