Heartbreaking update on Dolly who lost her battle for survival

We all hoped that Dolly could survive the uphill battle for her life. At the MSPCA-Angell in Boston, Dolly arrived at the animal protection and veterinary medicine organization on Saturday after she was found abandoned in Lexington in critical condition.

Dolly was severely underweight and unable to stand when she arrived. Her prognosis was uncertain, but veterinarians and the staff were not giving up. Further evaluation revealed Dolly was diagnosed with epilepsy, megaesophagus and a suspected autoimmune condition that contributed to her swallowing muscle weakness and emaciation.

The two-year-old mixed breed Staffordshire terrier had been receiving around-the-clock care and was on a carefully monitored “refeeding” program in order to prevent refeeding syndrome; a dangerous complication of reintroducing food too quickly to starved animals. She had the lowest possible body weight score and also arrived with wounds on her feet and tail.

It was hoped with treatment and rest, some of Dolly’s issues could be resolved, but last night, Dolly experienced a medical emergency and became oxygen-dependent.

With the scope of her conditions and concerns about her long-term prognosis and quality of life, we made the hard decision that the most compassionate choice was to let her go peacefully. She crossed the rainbow bridge today surrounded by people who cared deeply for her and showered her with love.

Dolly’s short time with the rescue organization provided her with all possible medical care and procedures. Having to report on these heartbreaking situations is difficult for everyone involved, including this writer, but rescue is so hard, and we always don’t achieve those happy endings we all dream about for each and every rescue situation.

We will carry Dolly with us in our hearts, in our work, and in our continued commitment to helping animals who cannot speak for themselves. We know you will too.

Rest in peace Dolly.
