In the city of Haughton, located in Northwest Louisiana, LaMa Animal Rescue, a dedicated group of volunteers and concerned neighbors never gave up. For weeks they had been trying to rescue a stray pooch with a plastic jar around his face and neck.
Nothing worked, and the dog’s situation was growing more serious.
Because the dog dubbed Duke was too scared to allow anyone to get too close, another alternative was to try using a drone, but even that failed.
Everyone had been brainstorming when they decided to ask Webster & Bossier Parish Sheriffs Offices to have their new Animal Control Officer come out and try to dart Duke. Of course, it wasn’t a desired option, but the danger of Duke not being able to properly breathe, starve to death or die from dehydration reduced other options.
There had been people constantly keeping track of Duke, and he needed to be rescued and relieved of the plastic jar enclosure immediately.

Sometimes good fortune steps in, and for Duke, this was his lucky day. When Officer Tommy arrived, Duke wasn’t able to see from side-to-side because of the container on his head. The officer was able to sneak up on him, slip the catch pole around his neck, and finally put the rescue effort to rest.

No one knows how Duke even survived while trapped. There was no hole in the plastic container, making it difficult for him to breathe, much less try to eat or drink.

He is now safe at the shelter. Surprise twist – he is heartworm NEGATIVE!
Everyone is sleeping better, now knowing Duke is free from his situation.

Thank you to the team that never gave up, and to Webster & Bossier Parish Sheriffs Offices.
