At the Cape Girardeau Fire Department in Missouri, on January 26, when the outdoor temperature read only 13 degrees Fahrenheit, Engine I responded to a vehicle on fire and extinguished it.

Shortly after the fire had been extinguished, one of the firemen discovered a young puppy in the backseat of the vehicle. Both the car and the puppy had been abandoned by the owner of the vehicle. The puppy was immediately extricated and rushed inside of a local convenience store for first aid. Because the fire company has pet oxygen masks donated by friends at Mac’s Mission, the puppy was able to be administered life saving care.

One of the first responders named the puppy Ember and took him home for the night. The next day Ember was taken to the nearby veterinarian and will need continued treatment.
Ember has since been receiving care at Southeast Missouri Pets.
Dr. Colleen Retz is continuing the puppy’s veterinary care with medications and breathing treatments. We are hopeful that Ember will make a full recovery and be available for adoption soon. We will keep you posted.

We appreciate any donation you can make to help care for pets like Ember who rely on the shelter in their time of need.
