In Clinton, County, Illinois, recovery efforts are continuing in New Baden after a 20-year-old man fell through a frozen pond on Monday.
According to the New Baden Fire Department, the man had been trying to rescue his dog that had been running on the ice before the ice cracked and the dog fell in. The dog was able to climb back on the ice and was reported to have made it back to the safety of the land, but the man never surfaced.
The press release stated:

At approximately 3:15 p.m., the New Baden Fire Department was dispatched to the area of Clinton County Line Road and Renth Road for a report of a male who had fallen through the ice of a pond and had not resurfaced. A dive team from the Swansea Fire Department was immediately requested shortly after units were dispatched. Additionally, numerous fire departments and emergency agencies assisted in the response. After several hours of search operations, due to extreme cold temperatures, the incident was transitioned from a rescue to a recovery.
The recovery efforts have restarted on Tuesday morning. More than 75 first responders have joined the search. The extremely cold weather has affected recovery efforts.
The identity of the missing man has not been released.
… respectfully ask the community to keep the individual’s family and all those involved in their thoughts and prayers. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
The public is being warned to NEVER walk onto ice to rescue a pet. Tragically, the good intentions of saving one’s pet on dangerous ice leads to the owner falling through – ending in hypothermia or even death. Frozen ponds and waterways can be very deceptive; thin spots are not readily seen and the fall into the freezing water can happen suddenly.
If your pet falls through the ice, stay at the edge where you are safe and call 911.
