In Paramount, California, a small dog would stand in the middle of a busy street as cars honked and swerved to avoid hitting him. After a few minutes, the frightened little guy would quietly return to the same porch – day after day.

That upstairs porch where the dog would hide and sleep, was not his home. No one knew where he came from, and no one knew how to help him. He wore a dirty, soiled diaper, but made little effort to chew at it or try to pull it off. Instead, he would climb the steps to that same porch. He wouldn’t allow anyone to get too close or touch him.

That porch had become his only sense of safety. Neighbors left food and water. Still, if he sensed someone was getting too close, he’d run away.
It was Suzette Hall, founder of the nonprofit animal rescue, Logan’s Legacy 29 who arrived at the location. Suzette’s heart sank, thinking of all the terrible consequences the dog could inadvertently face; he could be struck by a vehicle or stalked as prey by a hungry coyote.

Rescue volunteer, Rosario arrived first. A kind neighbor who had been trying her best to rescue the dog blocked off the staircase, so the dog could not run back into the busy street. And in that moment, Rosario succeeded – the dog finally was able to be safely crated.
Whenever a stray, lost or abandoned dog can be rescued, it’s a wonderful accomplishment. This time was no different.

I don’t know why he was wearing that terrible, filthy diaper. But I do know this—he did not deserve to sit in it, sleep in it, or suffer another moment alone.
Today, he is safe and has been taken to Camino Vet Hospital.
