18-pounds of ‘inconvenient’ shepherd puppy sits on shelter’s concrete floor watching people walk past

At the Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernardino, California, we meet Bane, a 13-week-old puppy, described by the staff and volunteers as “18 pounds of cream and black shepherd…sitting on a concrete floor in Kennel D24 watching people walk past.”

This is Bane:

Less than a week ago, Bane walked out of the shelter. He left with a family who promised to love him and were proud to adopt. They knew he had an upper respiratory infection, and they knew he was on prescribed medication. According to rescuers and the volunteers who spend so much of their time with these beautiful dogs, the family smiled as they carried him out in their arms.

For one brief day, Bane’s life changed, but by the next morning he was back at the shelter.

Now he sits in a kennel with a crusted little nose, bright eyes, and a body that still wiggles when someone stops in front of him. His chart says he is eating. Drinking. Active. Gaining weight. Negative for parvo. Being treated. Monitored. Trying.

He does not know he was “returned.” He doesn’t know he was “inconvenient.” This adorable little puppy only knows he’s alone again, and we all know puppies like to be around people.

Sadly, illnesses spread quickly in shelters. Puppies are stressed, puppies share the air as sick dogs enter while immune systems have yet to develop. Kennel cough and upper respiratory infections are common, but they require treatment and patience.

And instead of finishing his medication on a couch, cuddling a family, Bane is lying on cold concrete.

And now there is a deadline over his head. This puppy needs rescue now. Can you help? Please share his plight with approved rescues, friends, family and social media contacts. Sharing saves lives.

UPDATE 2/11: Bane is back on the urgent list for having yellow nasal discharge. He is now on his second round of antibiotics. He is one of the most at risk dogs. Only 13 weeks old and 18 pounds, he may never get to have an actual life.

BANE is the last of his brothers still at Devore. He does have one sister (Fammie) left, but they aren’t kenneled together.
