There has been much speculation lately about the health and welfare at South Africa’s Kruger National Park over the health and welfare of the legendary white lion, affectionately known by observers and park officials as Casper.

Less than two weeks ago, Casper had been spotted with obvious injuries, and from there speculation grew to a possible anthrax infection or a snake bite where the rare lion needed human intervention to save his life.

Fortunately on Thursday, park employees and rangers were able to locate him, examine him by a veterinarian and have determined the 11-year-old lion remains in good health.

Rangers did note Casper had some minor cuts above his right eye and around his mouth; the swelling and infection are being managed by rangers and the park’s veterinarians.
More than likely he had been fighting with another lion; pretty common fare for wildlife defending their own lives and their territories.
White lions are a rare genetic mutation of the African lion. They are not albino, but possess a recessive gene that causes a very light coat – nearly white. This condition makes them stand out which can be a disadvantage in the wild. Casper was born in 2014 and lived with his brothers.
