Constantly chained pup weathered heat with toy for comfort he insisted on taking with him when rescued

In Orange County, California, a two-year-old Bichon Frise pet store pup, had spent most of his life outdoors tethered by the side of the home. The little guy watched his family come and go, and although they did leave him food and water everyday, no one ever played with him anymore. No one ever invited him into the house when it poured rain, and even though the heat was nearly unbearable, still everyone walked past him.

His only comfort had been a small light blue stuffed toy he cuddled with and hugged at night as he fell asleep.

Everyday, Kayio remained tied to that same chain, and so through the rain and the scorching heat he used the short overhang from the roof for his only protection against the weather. Ironically, he slept next to the air-conditioning compressor outside his family’s back door.

And so, Kayio’s life was a daily bowl of food, water and the stuffed toy. While his family relaxed in air conditioned comfort in their home, and Kayio could hear laughter and joy, he was never included. The unbearable heat, and the loneliness had been his entire young life thus far.

By a stroke of good luck for Kayio, independent rescuer Suzette Hall had been contacted by her friend who, through persistence and gainful conversations between the dog’s owner and her soon to be rescuers, she had been able to convince the family to surrender Kayio.

And look at Kayio’s face now.

His smile says everything. His little blue toy accompanied him; perhaps the only friend he ever had. But now, he’s safe. He just arrived at a foster home. He has love. He has comfort. And he probably doesn’t even know what to do with himself after years of being tied up.

One thing is for sure; his little toy will always stay by his side. And now, so will love.
