Wisconsin Humane Society rescues emaciated Lab: Determined pup fights to recovery

The Lincoln County Humane Society (LCHS) in Wisconsin recently took in a sight that broke their hearts: a severely emaciated chocolate Labrador Retriever weighing only 15 pounds. They named him Gunther, and his story of resilience and the LCHS’s dedication to animal welfare has captured the hearts of pet lovers across the country.

He was so weak when he arrived that it was difficult for him to stand or walk. Gunther’s bones, clearly visible under his skin, show how long this poor soul has suffered. We do not know if this occurred by accident or if someone deliberately withheld food from him for a long period of time

Gunther’s Story of Neglect

Details surrounding Gunther’s abandonment are unclear, but his frail condition painted a grim picture of neglect. At a healthy weight, he would weigh closer to “40 pounds”. Gunther’s malnourished state indicated he likely wasn’t receiving proper food or care for an extended period.

If he was provided the care and nourishment his body desperately needs, he would likely weigh closer to 40 pounds. It is impossible to tell his age because his teeth are in such poor condition. Only time and better care will answer our questions about Gunther.

LCHS Stepped In to Save Gunther

The LCHS, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and caring for homeless animals in Lincoln County, Wisconsin, immediately assessed Gunther’s condition. Veterinarians determined he was malnourished and dehydrated, requiring immediate medical attention.

Gunther’s Road to Recovery

The LCHS staff lovingly nicknamed Gunther their “little trooper.” They created a specialized care plan to slowly and safely restore him to health. This included a regulated feeding schedule with easily digestible food to prevent complications. The LCHS staff provided plenty of fresh water and a warm, comfortable place to rest as Gunther regained his strength.

Gunther will be hospitalized at the vet all this week. The vet will update us on his condition each day so we will update all of Gunther’s supporters daily. He has some medical obstacles to overcome but we have high hopes for this sweet boy. He does have a foster home lined up when his hospitalization is done. We aren’t taking adoption applications on him at this time but watch the page for updates. Thank you all for your incredible generosity.
