‘Valentina’ returned to shelter and she doesn’t understand why but our hearts are breaking

At the Humane Society of Broward County in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a three-year-old mixed breed pup named Valentina didn’t have a very merry holiday. Her short video clip on TikTok broke our hearts, because we know Valentina had no idea why she is back at the shelter.

“We know her happy ending is out there.”

There’s no doubt Valentina isn’t a good natured pup. She is currently being treated for heartworms, and the shelter will continue paying for her medication and care. She’s adorable, friendly and just wants to be loved.

Sadly, the family who adopted her returned her because she wasn’t doing well with their cat. It is not known how the two had been introduced or if the friction between the two could have been avoided, thus having lost a chance in a loving home she so deserved.

At just 3 years old, sweet girl Valentina was returned to the shelter through no fault of her own—she was simply too curious about the cat in their home

Now, Valentina waits, wondering when someone will give her the second chance she so desperately deserves. She’s such a love bug and will lean into you for pets and butt scratches, almost as if she’s saying ‘please don’t leave me.’

Animal behaviorists suggest when introducing a new dog to the family cat, keep them separated at first, and allow them to get used to each other’s scents, and then slowly introduce them in controlled situations. Leash the dog, and reward his calm behavior while making sure the cat has a way to escape if she feels uncomfortable. Slowly repeat the interaction, and if there are any signs of aggression try again later – keeping more distance.

Make sure to observe body language and remember that introducing pets to each other can take time; patience and being calm.

Always check with a veterinarian or an animal behaviorist for expert advice and counseling.

Valentina lives to please. She has a big heart, loves to play with toys and loves everyone she meets. Please share her story with approved rescue organizations, friends, friends and social media contacts. Sharing saves lives.

To adopt Valentina, please fill out a pre-adoption application at www.humanebroward.com and come to the shelter to meet her. The shelter is located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, FL and opens daily at 11 a.m. If you have any questions, please call 954-989-3977 ext. 6.
