Two legged dog with ‘no limitations’ still waiting for ‘furever’ home after 3 years

Cola’s life journey began in India in 2020 where she was rescued during the Covid lockdown when rescuers found her dragging her little body on the streets during their weekly feeding rounds. Her little brother was rescued with her, but he passed away just hours later due to a preexisting injury in his neck.

Unfortunately, both of Cola’s hind legs had been amputated due to swelling and infection. It had been Kanaan Animal Welfare in India who stepped up to help.

Cola’s disability never got in her way; she was a cheerful and playful puppy. She never knew any difference between herself and other puppies, however no one wanted to adopt her. That’s when arrangements were made with their rehoming partners, Twenty Paws Rescue in Connecticut to bring Cola to the United States where she would have more opportunities to find a home.

On March 12, 2023, Cola prepared for her journey, and when she arrived, everyone fell in love with the pup who had learned to do everything with her front legs; a most amazing dog. Now three years old, she weighs 25 pounds, is currently in foster care and does not have to be expressed, can handle stairs and runs around.

Rescuers told her story on Instagram:

Sweet Cola came all the way from India over a year ago and is still looking for her forever home.

She’s 3 yrs old, 25 lbs, currently in foster in CT. She has wheels but cannot use them due to a fusion. She’s in rehab to help keep her front joints strong and we’re still exploring other mobility devices (she also loves walks in her carriage!).

She does not need to be expressed, can handle stairs, runs around… she’s perfect.

Cola was not able to use the wheels she had been fitted for because of her fusion, however that has not held her back. She continues her rehabilitation to help her joints stay strong while she scoots around, and that is the only medical care she is receiving.

She receives specialized case, and her treatment plan is unique to her. She currently goes to weekly laser rehab to relieve the pain and burden on her front limbs. She’s reassessed after every session. She will do this as long as she needs it. This treatment can be done at most specialty vet hospital and rehab facilities. She’s a sweet dog who just loves to snuggle, and her determination knows no bounds.

She has some new adaptive devices to try out and see if it improves her mobility. Stay tuned for upcoming videos on how she is handling it. She also has custom @barkertime.pet pajamas to hold her diaper in place.

As to her continuing mobility issues which have been causing her some discomfort, according to People, Twenty Paws has tried other mobility devices, including a skateboard. The rescue is now collaborating with 3DPets and Joey’s Paws to create a custom 3D-printed wheelchair for Cola.

The rescue organization is looking for an adopter who will keep up with her therapy to ensure she has the best life possible. If interested in learning more about Cola, her needs, and if she could be a match for your home, please click here.
