A Jack Russell terrier puppy, who has been wandering near busy highways by the Newark Liberty International Airport for weeks, has finally been captured and is safe. He is now at the Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge under mandatory stray hold and rehabilitation.

Monkey has found healing with our experienced dog kennel staff at RBARI following weeks of running the dangerous highways outside the Newark Airport. After a period of decompression, we are working with Monkey to overcome his fears.
According to the shelter, Monkey is extremely cautious of human contact. He evaded capture for weeks. Since arriving at the organization, he has been introduced to CC, the friendly office dog, and Monkey is slowly coming out of his shell and finding that humans aren’t all bad; he enjoys scratches and the safe lap of staff members.

Enrichment items like Kongs and music are helping to comfort Monkey, as he adapts to constant companionship and human contact. He is doing great with his daily rehabilitation sessions – so curious and treat motivated.

Buddah Dog Rescue & Recovery were able to trap Monkey; it remains unclear how he found himself near the airport running alone. It is suspected the young pooch had been dumped, as he is not the first Jack Russell terrier found in the area in recent months. Monkey is the fourth found over the summer; the other dogs were also captured and taken to local shelters.
When rescued, Monkey was covered in fleas, ticks and parasites. He has since been treated and is doing well.

Anyone with information or who recognizes Monkey is asked to contact local authorities.
