At the Friends of Emma Medical Rescue in Borger, Texas, a five-year-old Great Pyrenees named Sully arrived on Valentine’s Day after a long car trip; he had traveled 800 miles for 14 hours. It had been a very long time since anyone cared or loved this dog, and it showed.

His spirit is broken, his mental/emotional health is rattled – to say the least … and his body is quitting him quickly.

Sully is extremely underweight, covered in parasites – both internal and external, and his coat was so matted, it surely felt like “concrete blocks” to his skin. Sadly, he has severe heartworm disease, and the most obvious health problem is the grapefruit sized cranial mass protruding from his skull.

For two days after Sweet Sully’s arrival, he was allowed to decompress and get some much-needed rest. His “concrete coat” had been removed, and he was undergoing treatment for his parasite treatment. One good sign was watching Sully eagerly enjoy his food, and it is hopeful that he will soon be stable enough to undergo surgery to remove the huge mass early next week.

We’ve couldn’t tell it until we got him shaved down – but Sully has no tail – and… unbeknownst to the shelter under those horrible mats – he has been neutered. (one less thing, ‘eh?)

Sully has an unsteady gait and fell once while taking a walk outside. It is hoped Sully does not have a neurological response to a malignant tumor or perhaps the long term malnutrition or anemia due to the mass.
