In Craryville, New York, the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help locating the owner of a Cane Corso who was abandoned on the side of the road on Route 23 last Thursday.

According to the rescue organization, the dog dubbed Barney, had been spotted by a passerby who stopped to help. It was originally thought that Barney had been hit by a vehicle because he could not put any weight on one of his front legs. His leg was swollen and causing him intense pain.

Barney was transported to a veterinarian, and after numerous tests and x-rays, it was determined Barney was suffering from an advanced stage of osteosarcoma (bone cancer). This particular type of cancer has been described as one of the most painful conditions, and without proper medication and ongoing care, it causes excruciating pain. Osteorsarcoma is not a curable cancer, however it is treatable and in combination with chemotherapy can extend the life of a dog. Unfortunately, when a dog’s pain becomes unmanageable or the dog stops eating, the quality of life becomes unacceptable.

After careful evaluations and consultations with combined medical teams, it was determined that Barney was suffering too badly from this condition, and he was humanely euthanized.

Authorities have also determined that the owner, knowing his condition and not wanting to seek proper medical attention or reach out for assistance, abandoned Barney on the side of the road.

This is one of the most shameful, cowardly acts of cruelty one can do to an animal. In their most desperate time of need, to abandon an animal on the side of the road – in Barney’s case, knowing the painful condition that he was suffering from – is unconscionable and shows depraved indifference to this dog.

  1. This is beyond heartbreaking. That poor precious treasure. The lack of veterinary care was unconscionable and cruel. If Barney was terminally ill, the kindest thing to have done would have been to take him to the vet hospital for an euthanasia whilst his hooman was snuggling him and reassuring him that he was loved and would be missed very much.
Abandoning Barney was the absolute worst thing to do to a living and trusting companion. Instead this POS has a confirmed reserved place in the hottest part of Hell to burn forever for his cruelty.
Barney: Your life mattered and I hope you get justice for your terrible treatment by those hoomans you loved and trusted. Please look for MacKitty in Heaven and join his wonderful snuggle buddies group and RIP amongst loving friends furever.
