In Butler County, a judge sentenced a former Ohio dog rescue owner on Monday to four-and-a-half years in prison. Ronda Murphy pleaded guilty after 90 dogs were found living in terrible conditions in her home.

An investigation of Murphy’s rescue, Helping Hands for Furry Paws, began last summer after investigators found adult dogs and puppies being kept in various structures on two different properties. Officers from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, stated he conditions the animals were being kept in had been “the most horrible conditions they had ever seen.”

At least 30 dogs were found deceased, and their remains had been kept in five different refrigerators and freezers on the different properties. Some of the refrigerators had not been working.

Eleven dogs had been living in the home in deplorable conditions. Deputies stated the odors of urine and feces burned their eyes and affected their breathing. Animal control officers had to leave the home and retreat outdoors several times before being able to rescue all of the dogs.

Murphy pleaded guilty to 12 counts of animal cruelty in January; eight of the counts were listed as felonies. In addition to the prison sentence, the judge ordered Murphy to pay $16,221.88 to reimburse Animal Friends Humane Society.

The dogs were taken to Animal Friends Humane Society of Butler County for treatment.

And how to make a sad story, a happy one, please meet Shelby – a survivor of Murphy’s neglect.

From hoarding house to luxury

Shelby has been through a lot in her 6 years of life. She is the last dog from the hoarding case of 92 dogs. This little girl is shy to meet people, but will become best friends with anyone willing to be patient. She has a goofy personality that results in zoomies! She is friends with other dogs and loves to play with toys. She is house broken and not destructive when left alone. She has not been around any cats to our knowledge, so we don’t know how she would do with them.
