A lawsuit filed this week alleges a horrific dogfighting operation in Cumberland County, New Jersey. The lawsuit, brought by animal welfare advocates, details the rescue of over 120 dogs from a squalid compound. The dogs were reportedly found in filthy conditions, with many exhibiting signs of abuse and injuries consistent with dogfighting.

Many of the dogs had visible scarring; others were emaciated including both pregnant and lactating moms.

According to the news release from the Humane Society, the lawsuit names several individuals as defendants, alleging they were involved in the operation. It seeks financial compensation for the care of the rescued animals and permanent custody to ensure their safety.

dogs and puppies were found living in barren pens and cages throughout multiple buildings while others were found shivering in the cold rain in outdoor pens or on heavy chains with little protection from the elements.

The investigation included reports from the Division of Criminal Justice, the NJ State Police and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Eight people have been arrested and charged in connection with the search.

Disturbing Details Emerge

The lawsuit paints a grim picture of the conditions in which the dogs were found. The animals were allegedly kept in cramped cages, deprived of food and water, and forced to fight. Many of the dogs reportedly suffered from malnutrition, dehydration, and severe injuries.

Animal Welfare Advocates Applaud Rescue

Animal welfare organizations have hailed the rescue as a major victory. They are calling for a swift and thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.

This is a horrific case of animal cruelty. We are grateful to the brave individuals who rescued these dogs and are committed to ensuring their safety and well-being.

Long Road to Recovery for Rescued Dogs

The rescued dogs are now receiving medical care and rehabilitation. It is expected to take a significant amount of time for them to recover from the physical and psychological trauma they endured. It is likely the rescued dogs had been trained and bred to be used in dogfighting.

How You Can Help

If you are concerned about dogfighting, there are a number of things you can do to help. You can donate to animal welfare organizations that work to rescue and rehabilitate abused animals. You can also report any suspected dogfighting activity to the authorities.
