They say good things come to those who wait, and that’s certainly true for Fiona, a sweet senior dog who recently found her forever home after an incredible 11 years at Second Chance Shelter in Boaz, Wisconsin. Shelter staff knew Fiona was a special girl, but for whatever reason, her perfect match just hadn’t come along.
On Friday, the 13-year-old dog was adopted by a couple in Wisconsin after she was transferred to Albert’s Dog Lounge in Wisconsin; a rescue that specializes in senior dogs whether looking for new homes or being loved and cared for during their hospice stays.
Why Wisconsin?
Shelters in the southern United States, like Alabama, often face overwhelming pet overpopulation. Second Chance Shelter works tirelessly to connect these deserving dogs with loving families in areas with a lower stray population, like Wisconsin. This heartwarming mission gives pups like Fiona a much better shot at finding their forever home.
Upon arriving at Albert’s Dog Lounge, she put on a brave face and spent the first part of the day at McFarland Animal Hospital getting her wellness exam, bloodwork and vaccinations.
Afterward she took a field trip to meet new at friends at Nutzy Mutz & Crazy Catz where she was showered with a new dog bed, bandana, feast mat for meals, and loads of dehydrated lamb lung treats! Fiona explored the whole store!

Golden Years Deserve Golden Love
At 11 years old, Fiona had become a fixture at the shelter where workers showered her with love and attention, but there’s no substitute for a loving family. Fiona longed for a comfy couch, a backyard to explore, and someone to call her own.
Fiona’s story went viral, and although she had several adoption applications, her special needs had to be addressed; most important considerations were a family who was home a lot and a fenced in yard for Fiona to explore and enjoy.
Fiona’s new family saw her story online, and just knew they could provide the home this girl needed. Carrie Saskowski, Fiona’s new mom was able to offer everything on the dog’s wish list including a beautiful backyard, a family who is home a lot and lots of love during her senior years.
Fiona’s journey is a heartwarming reminder that age is just a number. Senior dogs have so much love to give, and with a little patience, they can find their happily ever after. May we remind anyone looking for a furry friend, to consider opening their hearts and homes to senior pets. You might just find the perfect companion you never knew you were looking for.
