In Dallas, Texas, an adorable living package of fluff and big brown eyes has quickly become the most popular pooch around – that is – is the little one named “Toast” a dog or a coyote?

According to Dallas Animal Services, Officer Jacqui Sutherland is betting on Toast being a dog, but until the DNA tests confirm her genetic makeup, she’s not going anywhere, and as of now, no one at the shelter is in any rush to see Toast leave.

It was on Monday that the Dallas Police found Toast eating from a dumpster, and with her tan coat and her big ears, did she or didn’t she look like a coyote pup?

Actually, until Toast’s DNA is revealed, she will continue to be fostered by Sutherland, who is considered one of the area’s leading urban coyote experts. And no matter what the end result, Sutherland says this is a good teaching and learning experience for everyone.

Dallas Animal Services’ Wildlife Animal Services Officer Jacqui Sutherland will be fostering little Toast while we await his DNA test results (just to be sure!).

We want to take this opportunity on #WildifeWednesday to remind everyone that we need help to #KeepWildlifeWild! It is critical that only trained and certified professionals handle wildlife. Coyotes are not dogs and you should never, ever touch a baby wild animal. If you see one and are concerned for their well-being, please call 311.

Please do not touch, feed, socialize, play with, or otherwise engage with wildlife. Keeping our wild neighbors safe means letting them be and observing from a distance. Respect wildlife, save wildlife!

It is hoped the popularity of Toast draws more interest in people wanting to adopt a dog from their nearest shelter. Maybe Toast is an Australian cattle dog or a coyote; she’s not eligible to be adopted until she is confirmed to be a domestic puppy, but there are so many other adorable little ones just waiting for a new, loving home. We have seen the offers and the long lines on social media offering to adopt her, but there are many adorable puppies ready to find love in all the right places.

All reports about Toast do agree she is one adorable little pup. No matter what her DNA reveals, we need to remember to respect wild life and/or adopt a homeless pet from a shelter near you. Be a hero, and share the love for all animals. Be kind.

  1. I wonder how long it takes to get the DNA test results??? I think it’s possible that this precious little treasure is a mix (part dog and part coyote)……. In any case this precious little treasure needs help right now and I hope if it turns out that Toast is a coyote, that he can be released to the wild, far away from people (especially dumpsters)!!!
