In Birmingham’s Calthorpe Park, a Good Samaritan found an obese cat abandoned and zipped up in a sports bag. When discovered and brought to the RSPCA, the two-year-old cat weighed 26 pounds, and according to one of the staff members at the RSPCA, she was “the largest I have ever seen.”

According to the RSPCA, the cat then named “Big Bertha” had been too large to even go through the cat pod.

She weighed in at a whopping 11.8kg and was extremely matted. A vet carefully clipped away her matting, but she was still too large to live in a cat pod! Luckily, she’s been on a strict diet and exercise regime with a foster carer and is making amazing progress

And once she was cleaned up, the cat was placed on a diet. According to her veterinarian, the cat’s obesity had been caused by “lack of exercise and lots of food.”

When first rescued, Big Bertha had little to no energy, and would just come out to use her sandbox and wait for her food. Now she has increased energy – goes up and down the stairs and actually likes moving around checking out her surroundings.

The weight loss program has been so successful, the shelter, to avoid weight shaming, changed her name to Bertha – getting rid of the “Big” part of course. Bertha now weighs 19 pounds, is quite beautiful and will soon be ready for a new home. Her target weight is getting down to 16 pounds.

She’s a good girl really. She’ll make a lovely cat for somebody.
